Pediatric and Geriatric Therapy

Dog: The Ultimate Healing Modality

Pet therapy is any guided interaction between a person and a trained dog or other animal. Unlike a service dog or emotional support dog, a therapy dog isn’t required to have any specialized training (although our therapy dogs are professionally trained and certified). A therapy dog only has to have the sweet temperament that sets someone’s mind at ease while they’re undergoing treatment or therapy for virtually any medical condition.

If you love dogs, then you’re already familiar with the positive emotions you can’t help but feel whenever you’re around one. That reaction isn’t just pleasant for its own sake. It can help reduce feelings of stress and anxiety, as well as reduce the psychological effects of trauma. And because the presence of a friendly dog can prompt the body to release serotonin, prolactin and oxytocin, pet therapy can effectively reduce symptoms of depression in addition to several other mental health disorders.

Jody & Murphy: More Than Just Indescribably Cute

Acucare Physical Therapy proudly welcomed Jody and Murphy to our family in 2021. The two benevolent pooches underwent training at Smoking Dakota Kennels in Sioux Falls before receiving official certification from Therapy Dogs International, and they now help anyone who would like to heal in greater comfort.

Whether they’re working solo or as a two-dog team, Jody and Murphy love spreading feelings of joy, peace and serenity. They also make certain Acucare Physical Therapy remains thoroughly protected against invasion by squirrels and rabbits – a service they graciously provide free of charge.
